That was a time when diamond cutters were researching to find the most complex and refined ways to cut a diamond. The initial brilliant cuts were Mazarins, named after the creator Cardinal Mazarin. After a series of improvements and transformations, the Mazarins evolved to give birth to Portuguese Peruzzi, “old European cut” and “old mine” in the 1700s. It was only in the year 1919, that the early modern round brilliant cut diamond came into existence. Named after the Russian diamond enthusiast Marcel Tolkowsky, the cut was originally referred to as the Tolkowsky cut.
The Round Brilliant Cut Today:
The contemporary round brilliant diamond is comprised of 58 facets (57 with the culet excluded). The top portion of the diamond is termed crown, whereas the bottom of the diamond is termed pavilion. The largest facet is on the top and is also referred to as the table and the smallest facet is at the base and is known as the culet. The symmetrically balanced shape permits maximum light to be reflected back to the observer.
The Cost:
The cost per carat of a round diamond is comparatively much higher than any other shapes. There are two factors which are responsible for this:
1)They are more in demand owing to their popularity and their incredible sparkle.
2)In the process of creating a round diamond from a rough one, a lot of rough stones are wasted. The wastage is more when compared to the creation of any other cuts.
Round diamonds are evergreen. Despite the exorbitant price tag, they remain the most preferred choice of all diamond lovers today and will continue to lure people till the end of time.
