Everything You Need to Know About the G Diamond Color

There is a worldwide standard for measuring diamond quality.

The Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) color-grading scale for diamonds is the industry standard. Each letter grade has a clearly defined range of color appearance and the G diamond color stands at the near-colorless scale.

When it comes to diamonds, colorless is considered the best. In the GIA color scale, D, E, and F diamonds are colorless diamonds.

Since the G diamond color is just a small step further away from the colorless scale, people often ask if it is a good choice to buy.

Let’s answer this question and know more about this color grade.

What Does Color G Diamond Mean?

The top three grades in the diamond color grading system are D, E, and F, which make up the colorless range.

Next to them are G, H, I, and J, which are considered Near Colorless.

As you go further down the line, the color ranges are labeled Faint Yellow, Very Light Yellow, and Light Yellow.

Since the diamond color is the second most important factor to consider when buying a diamond, it is important that you understand its impact on the price of the diamond as well.

The prices of the diamonds increase the higher you go on the color scale. Thus, colorless diamonds are the most expensive when all other factors are considered the same.

G diamond color is the near-colorless range. However, when you look at it face-up, the diamond will appear as white as diamonds in the higher color grades from D to F.

Do G color diamonds look yellow? It has a slightly yellow or warm tint to it.

The tint is difficult to notice unless you put the G color diamond next to a D, E, or F color diamond.

But, if you choose a yellow gold setting for a diamond color, the yellowish tint can be hidden and it will look completely white.

Can You Tell the Difference Between F and G Color Diamonds?

When diamonds are seen in the face-up view, the diamond’s facets interact with light and show their sparkle and brilliance.

At this point, it is very hard for an untrained eye to pick up subtle differences between adjacent color grades like F and G.

A G-color diamond faces up icy-white and almost identical to colorless D, E, and F stones. In fact, if you were to see a standalone G diamond color without any side-by-side comparisons to other stones, they would look completely colorless.

If you need more convincing, one of the best ways to determine whether a G diamond color is too yellow is to see a G diamond stone in a jewelry store.

Even a trained grader would have difficulty picking out a G color diamond if set between D, E, and F color diamonds in a face-up view.

Introducing the GSi and GVs Quality Diamonds

G/Si Quality

In the range of the G color diamond, the G/Si quality diamonds are an excellent choice for engagement rings because of their bright white color with no visible inclusions.

The quality G defines its color quality and only expert knowledge is needed to identify any color tint. If seen with the naked eye, it’s as clear as the diamonds in the colorless range.

The Si defines its clarity quality which means “slight inclusions”. The imperfections on this diamond are not noticeable to the unaided eye. The inclusions will only be detected under a jeweler’s high-powered magnifying glass.

The Si category is available as G color diamond Si1 and Si 2. The SG color diamond Si1 is slightly cleaner than the Si2.

G/Vs Quality

If you want to know the connoisseur’s choice, it’s the G/Vs quality diamond. It’s the diamond for those who like to appreciate the finer things in life.

The G quality defines the bright white color of this diamond. Similar to other G-color diamonds, this diamond is essentially considered colorless.

The clarity quality is Vs which means “very slight” referring to inclusions, or lack of them. Any inclusions in this diamond can only be detected with expert knowledge and with the use of a high-powered magnifying glass of a jeweler.

This category is available as Vs1 and Vs2. Vs1 diamonds are slightly cleaner than the Vs2 diamonds. A Vs2 G color diamond price is $7,250.

Is a G Diamond Color Good?

According to Diamonds Pro, with the right cut of a diamond, there is surprisingly little difference between a D color diamond and one with an H color grade. That is also true when you compare a D color diamond with a G diamond color.

The concern of people who purchase diamonds is mostly whether a diamond with a color grade that’s below the colorless range will look yellow.

However, this concern has arisen mainly because of marketing.

Diamond dealers and sellers often push consumers to buy the more expensive diamonds and can exaggerate the importance of the color of the diamond.

They fail to mention the slight difference between near-range colors when the diamonds have the right cut.

Make a well-informed decision when you are made to choose between a D color and a G color diamond where there is a significant difference when it comes to price when all other diamond qualities are the same.

In fact, a D color diamond is $840 more expensive when it is priced at $6,840 compared to a G color diamond priced at only $6,000.

When the cut is the same, the facet pattern and ability of the diamond to reflect light are almost the same between these two color grades. Choose a round brilliant cut that is great at concealing any hints of color in a diamond, even when it belongs to the lower color grades.

But, even if you choose a cut that displays color more obviously, there is a very small difference between a G color diamond and a D color diamond.

Should You Go For G Color Diamonds?

When being limited by your budget, the G diamond color is the best you can get closest to the colorless diamonds.

It’s a great choice if you want to save some cash while you can get a near to colorless grade for your diamond.

With a G-color diamond, you won’t have to pay high prices to achieve the ideal look.
